Foundation Update from L'OCCITANE USA October 2010
L'OCCITANE Foundation – 10 Years with Orbis

The L'OCCITANE Foundation has partnered with Orbis International in their mission to fight preventable blindness. This year the L'OCCITANE Foundation celebrates its 10th year in partnership with Orbis. We're proud to share that in these ten years nearly $700,000 has been donated to Orbis by the Foundation to help fund international projects offering treatment and prevention of blindness. Through this partnership, L'OCCITANE has helped finance vision screening campaigns, an eye clinic, and two ophthalmology centers in Bangladesh. To support this continued effort in 2010, L'OCCITANE en Provence - USA will donate 100% of the proceeds from sales of its United to Save Sight shea butter soap.

World Sight Day – October 14, 2010

Today, October 14th, is World Sight Day (WSD), an annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness, visual impairment and rehabilitation of the visually impaired. It is held on the second Thursday of October each year. World Sight Day is observed around the world by all organizations involved in preventing visual impairment or restoring sight.

It is estimated that over seven million people become blind every year. The causes of avoidable blindness are frequently associated with poverty and lack of access to quality eye care services. By raising public awareness around the world about this global health issue these organizations hope to ensure increased access to health services and eye care in relation to both prevention and treatment of eye conditions. 80% of blindness is avoidable, readily treatable and/or preventable. These global efforts would reduce the magnitude of avoidable blindness.
