Phonetically you pronounce our name "lox- ee- tahn".
L’Occitane means “the woman from Occitania”. Occitania is the name of the ancient geographic area in southern France, spanning from northeastern Spain to northwestern Italy.
We use paper, cardboard and wood from sustainably managed forests and forests that have received the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) label. The principles of the FSC are based on complying with international treaties and respecting the rights of indigenous peoples, forest workers and local communities. Maintaining the biological diversity of ecosystems and the environment in general, and notably the restoration and conservation of natural forests, are also at the heart of its concerns. For example, to apply the principles of sustainable development, it is recommended that trees be replanted in a responsible manner to replace trees that have been cut down.
To obtain the FSC label, there must be regular monitoring to assess the condition of the forest, yields of forest products, chain of custody, management activities and their social and environmental impacts. This label was created by the FSC NGO and is endorsed by Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the WWF, among others.
For over 20 years, we have sourced our shea butter from Burkina Faso, Africa with a fair trade approach. The main principles of this arrangement are to:
• Establish a respectful working arrangement
• Support the development of local producers in order to increase their autonomy
• Create an industrial partnership
For 30 years we have supported local traditional production methods and sourced supplies directly from local producers: cooperatives in Haute-Provence for AOC lavender essential oil from Haute Provence, the oil mill in Gard for almond oil, the Château d’Estoublon for AOC olive oil from the Baux de Provence valley, and a distiller-producer in Corsica for immortelle essential oil.
The AOC controlled origin label is identifies a product and the authenticity and specific nature of its geographic origin.
We have taken action to help the visually impaired, which includes:
• the use of Braille labeling on our products since 1996 so that the visually impaired can have access to them, and in English so that it is understood by the greatest number of consumers.
• the creation of the association "Provence dans tous les sens" (All the senses of Provence) by the employees of L'Occitane, which introduces visually-impaired children to the world of fragrance creation.
• our financial support for ORBIS (www.orbis.org) - an international non-governmental organization that fights blindness in developing countries through training, prevention and care.
The decision to continue or stop selling a particular product is taken after studying the preferences of our consumers and other different products that are already available on the international market. If your favorite product has been discontinued phased out, ask your store or our customer service department for advice: other solutions will be suggested that can also meet your needs.
Ever since the company was created in 1976, we have chosen not to test our products on animals or to ask others to conduct animal testing on our behalf. As a reflection of this approach, we have never used products of animal origin, with the exception of beehive products (honey, royal jelly, propolis) and we were among the first to indicate this commitment in writing on our products.
An organic ingredient is one that is derived from organic agriculture and which, under European legislation that took effect in 1991, must comply with certain basic rules, including:
• respecting the ecosystem by using cultivation and breeding methods that strive to maintain natural balances,• using no chemical fertilizers and pesticides or synthetic herbicides,
• using no genetically modified organisms (GMOs),
• mandatory inspection by organic certification bodies - this applies to both the producers and processors of organic products,
• traceability back to the source area of the plant, whatever the country of production.
In parallel, on an international scale, NOP (National Organic Program) regulations were introduced in the United States in 2002, while JAS (Japan Agricultural Standard) was introduced in Japan in 2000.
Our organic cosmetic products comply with the specifications of the Ecocert "BIO“ organic label, which sets the highest quality standards for cosmetic products made with natural substances. Ecocert is an independent certification body that has produced a list of authorized ingredients in this case and insists on:
• a minimum of 95% natural ingredients or ingredients of natural origin
• a minimum of 95% of total plant ingredients certified organic
• a minimum of 10% of total ingredients certified organic
Synthetic fragrances or colorants, silicones and mineral oils are not permitted. Only certain essential synthetic ingredients are authorized when no natural alternative is available.
Some of our products use 100% ingredients of natural origin (the Elixir with immortelle essential oil, shea butter, Mom & Baby Balm, etc.). The great majority of our products contain over 90% natural ingredients or ingredients of natural origin. Our ingredients of natural origin are indicated on most of our packaging by two stars ** in the product composition section.
No. Organic formulas contain potential allergens due to their high concentration of essential oils and floral waters.
Organic formulas contain potential allergens due to their high concentration of essential oils and floral waters, and may not be suitable for certain skin types.
Organic products contain essential oils that have preservative qualities, and also antibacterial ingredients such as tea tree oil or peppermint oil to help preserve the products.
At present, parabens are under scrutiny since a controversial British study revealed a potential link between parabens and cancer. Therefore, with regard to this subject, we ensure that we keep abreast of the latest studies and the position taken by the world's bodies responsible for cosmetic regulations. We have always proceeded with caution and used preservatives in doses lower than those authorized by legislation in all countries (between 0.3% and 0.5%, while international legislation allows a maximum of 0.8%) . As a company that always errs on the side of caution, we replace parabens as far as possible with other preservatives whose toxicological risks have been fully investigated.
SLS is a foaming agent. The controversy over SLS is not due to its danger to health but the fact that it is obtained from extremely reactive gases, requiring harsh chemical processes.
These dangers are well-known and various purification processes are used today to obtain a PEG without ethylene oxide. Moreover, Laureth Sulfate (PEG) has the advantage of being more gentle than a lauryl sulfate (which is not a PEG).
Today, over 40% of our foaming products are formulated without SLS and we tend to use a combination of lauryl sulfate and gentle surfactants derived from sugar.
Yes. In Burkina Faso, the manufacture of shea butter is a craft assigned to women. Because the trees are sacred, it is forbidden to pick the fruit, so it can only be collected from the ground. The women of Burkina Faso harvest the Shea fruit, extract and dry the nuts, grind them to make a fine paste and transform the paste into Shea Butter – a universal and irreplaceable beauty care product.
Products that contain pure essential oils or a high concentration of menthol, camphor or eucalyptol are not recommended during pregnancy. When products should not be used by pregnant women, this is indicated in the precautions on the product label.
Our products are all tested against allergies and F.D.A. approved. Not only does each of our end products go through extensive testing, each ingredient is scrupulously tested as well. The frequently misunderstood word "hypoallergenic" means "least likely to cause a reaction". It does not mean that it will never cause reactions on anyone ever. In fact, no product can say that.
Yes. We carefully select our plant ingredients and control both their quality and origin. We follow the principles of phytotherapy and aromatherapy, use no animal products (except for beehive products: honey, royal jelly and propolis) and test our products under medical supervision. We strive to use natural ingredients in all our product formulas.
To ensure that our consumers can use our products in the very best conditions, we give a use-by date on sensitive products, i.e. products for babies or organic products. Other products, with a durability of over 30 months, are not required to carry the use-by date. In this case, the "Period After Opening" (PAO) symbol appears on the product and indicates the number of months within which the product can continue to be used with optimum effectiveness, after opening, under normal conditions of use. This symbol does not appear on products where there is no risk of deterioration (eau de toilette, samples, etc.).
For 30 years, we have supported local traditional production methods and sourced our supplies directly from local producers: cooperatives in Haute-Provence for AOC lavender essential oil; cooperatives and the oil mill in Gard for almond oil; the Château d’Estoublon in the Baux de Provence valley for AOC olive oil; the Terroirs de Haute-Provence mill for AOC organic olive oil and organic olive leaf extract; beekeepers from the Valensole plateau for honey; orchards in the Hautes-Alpes region for organic apples; rice fields in Camargue for organic red rice; forests of Haut Var for cade essential oil; orchards in Luberon for cherry extract; distiller-producers in Corsica for organic immortelle essential oil and organic verbena; and women's groups in Burkina Faso for shea butter (co-development).
These active ingredients undergo rigorous selection and inspection with regard to their origin. Their quality and traceability must be guaranteed from the moment they are harvested, throughout every step of processing, right up to the finished product. This policy is an important part of our sustainable trade approach.
From the age of 25 your skin starts to become weaker. At this age, we recommend that you use skincare products with a preventative action. The products in the Almond-Apple range have been specially developed for this purpose. They contain a unique combination of active ingredients, enhance the beauty of your skin, and help provide effective protection against the first signs of aging.
The skin around the eyes is finer, more fragile, and becomes marked more easily than the skin of the rest of the face. Because of this, it is preferable to use a skincare product that has been specifically formulated for the eye area, such as the Olive Express Eye Treatment, the Immortelle Eye Balm, Immortelle Very Precious Eye Serum or the Shea Butter Ultra Rich Eye Balm. These products are fragrance-free, colorant-free and ophthalmologist tested.
Night-time offers a favorable environment for your skin. During the day, your skin is in defense mode and exposed to harsh environmental elements (pollution, smoke, UV radiation, changes in temperature). At night, this is no longer the case and the skin is more receptive to skincare products, so it can work to protect its beauty.
During pregnancy, the skin becomes drier and is subject to unusual mechanical stress that, in 60 to 80% of cases, can lead to stretch marks. To keep the skin smooth and prevent stretch marks from appearing, it is essential to use products that nourish and firm and improve skin suppleness. In this case, the Shea Butter Mom & Baby Balm or certain products from the Almond range are recommended.
Products that contain pure essential oils or a high concentration of menthol, camphor or eucalyptol are not recommended during pregnancy. Should you have questions regarding a specific product, please contact our
customer service department.
The skin of the bust requires daily care to keep it supple, so it's important to use a nourishing product such as the Shea Butter Mom & Baby Balm. Simply avoid applying products before feeding, and don't apply products to the nipple or areola. As for using products that contain essential oils, the recommendations and precautions are the same as those that apply to pregnant women. Should you have questions regarding a specific product, please contact our
customer service department.
L’Occitane has developed a range of products for men that is adapted to their skin and specific needs: the CADE range. Products in this range can, of course, be used with other L’Occitane products. All of our products are very gentle on all skin types – even the most sensitive.
The
ultra-comforting shea & organic cotton range, with products for a complete skincare routine (cream, mask, cleansing milk, etc.) has been specially formulated for sensitive skin. It soothes the skin and reduces redness.
The "sensitive skin" products in the Honey range and the Shea Butter Mom & Baby Balm are ideal for protecting and nourishing the fragile skin of children, which cannot fully defend itself against the physical and chemical damage to which we are exposed every day. Precautions are listed on the labels of our products that should not be used by children such as certain products made with essential oils.
