Description:

Lavandula officinalis, also known as fine lavender or true lavender (Lamiaceae family), fills the mountains of Provence with its vibrant color and scent, at altitudes from 600 to 1,500 meters. The "controlled-origin" A.O.C. label is only granted to lavender that is grown at altitudes above 800 meters, in Haute-Provence. This is the lavender of perfumers, with its small violet-blue flowers and its fine, subtle scent.

Traditions:

From the 18th century, lavender water was used in baths for its calming and relaxing effect. The essential oil was used to treat migraines and rheumatism. Lavender sachets can be placed under pillows to help people sleep, and in closets to perfume linen and deter mites. During walks in the countryside, fresh lavender flowers can be rubbed over the skin to soothe insect bites.

Properties:

The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the flowering tops and has astringent, antiseptic and relaxing properties. It purifies the skin, helps regulate sebum production and evens out and clarifies the complexion.
