Winter Skincare Tip 3: Moisturize

by L'Occitane USA

Don't Forget to Moisturize!

A great way to soothe or prevent chapped skin is to moisturize. Moisturize your hands, body and feet.

Any lotion or cream that contains shea butter, vegetable oils or glycerin will help protect your skin and keep it well hydrated. When it comes to moisturizing, any of these ingredients are the best for the skin as they are extremely well tolerated.

Winter Skincare Q&A

by L'Occitane USA

Your Winter Skincare Concerns Answered

You've asked and we've answered. Here are a few skincare concerns our fans have expressed. See what our skincare experts suggest...and which L'OCCITANE products might help!

Dry tight flaky skin…and problems with this when applying makeup - flaky.

Make-up applies best over smooth, hydrated skin. Try using a rich, creamy exfoliator (for example, L’OCCITANE Shea Face Scrub ) twice a week to remove flakes and leave a smooth, even texture. Serums such as L’OCCITANE Shea Fabulous Serum ) can help absorb your moisturizer better as it acts like a “moisture magnet”, keeping your skin plump and smooth. Finally a rich face cream, such as newly reformulated L’OCCITANE Shea Ultra Rich Face Cream , will keep your skin and make-up in place and glowing all day long.

Dry spotty skin, red blotches

Redness is a sign of inflammation. Your skin is being irritated by any number of things (cold, wind, pollens or even pollution in the air). Newly reformulated L’OCCITANE Shea Ultra Gentle Moisturizer is packed with anti-irritants which will help to sooth redness and leave your skin feeling fresh, comfortable and looking its best.

Eczema breakout from dry skin

First, consult your dermatologist. To keep your skin looking its best you will want to keep it calm, smooth and hydrated. Apply a gentle exfoliator a few times a week to minimize any uneven flakes or patches and nourish it with a moisturizer rich in anti-irritants. L’OCCITANE Shea Face Scrub and Shea Ultra Gentle Moisturizer would be beautiful choices. Since stress can also play a part in Eczema, think about taking some time to de-stress. A deeply relaxing Lavender bath does wonders to calm nerves and relax both the mind and body!

The skin on my shins is so dried out it looks like the desert with big cracks in it. What will help the most?

You want to deliver a rush of moisture very fast. The best thing by far is pure Shea Butter . It literally melts into even the driest, most cracked skin and both, moisturizes and nourishes with naturally occurring Vitamin E. Apply it specifically where needed for a highly effective treatment. After the skin is healed and there are no more open cracks exfoliate!

Dry, itchy scalp and dandruff shampoos leave my hair like straw-- what can I use to help my scalp that won't be so damaging to my hair?

Dandruff can be the result of either very dry scalp (a nourishing shampoo and conditioner with Shea could be the answer), or a fungus that will create extra cell renewal and would need to be treated accordingly with the help of a dermatologist. In this case, I lean towards a very dry scalp so Shea shampoo and conditioner should work. To immediately sooth an itchy, irritated scalp you can also use L’OCCITANE Soothing Concentrated Hair Mask . It will leave your sensitive scalp hydrated, healthy, and rebalanced for long lasting comfort and well-being.

Dry cracked skin around my nails

Cuticles tend to dry out and break anytime the seasons change, and cold weather does not help. The best treatment is L’OCCITANE Shea Butter Nail and Cuticle Cream with myrrh, which also strengthens your nails and will keep your fingertips soft and smooth. Pure Shea Butter also works very well and hardens the nails. Try applying right before going to bed.

Wind burnt face from skiing or running in the cold

Wind and cold deplete our skin’s natural protective barrier. You can try using L’OCCITANE Shea Ultra Rich Face Cream or Shea Ultra Gentle Moisturizer which are packed with natural sugars to help boost skin’s natural defense system and will leave your complexion looking even and glowing. However, add the L’OCCITANE Shea Fabulous Serum under your moisturizer of choice as it contains Shea Shield Extract to protect the skin from the harshest conditions. I don’t go snowboarding without it!

Chapped lips

Use a damp washcloth to exfoliate lips and remove dead skin. Try exfoliating with a mix of honey and sugar. Then apply pure Shea Butter to leave your lips smooth and kissably soft with lip nourishing Vitamin E.

What do you use on your face during winter for extremely dry cheeks when the rest of your face feels soft and hydrated?

After applying your regular moisturizer, try using a small amount of pure Shea Butter by warming the smallest amount in your hands and then smoothing it into just the areas that need it. Also, make sure you are exfoliating, as moisturizers struggle to absorb into dead skin.

I have combination skin. Some parts of my skin are dry while the rest of my skin is oily. But my hands take a tough beating. I’m always cleaning my house keeping everything clean and I always wear gloves. I wash my hands sooo many times, my hands still get dehydrated. I’m packing on moisture like crazy to keep them soft etc.

It sounds like you’re doing a lot of the right things to keep your hands soft. One suggestion is try exfoliating your hands a few times a week, then dropping down to about once a week after your hands begin to feel softened. The reason is that your moisturizer may not be able to get to the skin that really needs it because it’s having to fight past many layers of dead, dried out cells. Try L’OCCITANE One-Minute Hand Scrub for an easy fix. It’s made specifically for the special needs of hands and enriched with Organic Brown Sugars and Shea Oil. Then apply hand cream. Your hands will thank you! You can also apply L’OCCITANE Shea Hand Cream or pure Shea Butter once a week before going to bed and wear cotton gloves overnight. Hands will look like new!

My face is really dry when I’m done showering then throughout the day they get really greasy!! Recently I’ve been getting Acne.

Your cleanser may be over drying your skin, causing it to produce too much oil and clogging your pores. First, I would try a new cleanser (for example, L’OCCITANE Angelica Cleansing Gel ). It’s also important to tone the skin with an alcohol-free toner that will refresh your skin’s moisture after cleansing and will give you a deeper clean to your pores.

I have oily skin which dries out a little in the winter. I have trouble finding a moisturizer that is rich enough to keep me hydrated but doesn't clog my pores and make me break out. Any recommendations?

First and most importantly, hydrate by drinking water! Try using L’OCCITANE Angelica Hydration Cream during winter. It does its work below the surface and will give you a fresh, radiant glow all winter while keeping your skin feeling comfortable.

Any recommendations for keratosis pilaris acts up in the winter?

Just like in the summer, you will want to keep it scrubbed and calm! Try using L’OCCITANE Shea Butter Body Scrub several times a week followed by a calming body moisturizer like our Shea Body Lotion or Ultra Rich Cream .

What’s best for blackheads?

Blackheads can be a battle! First, consider getting a professional facial to have them extracted and start with a clean slate. It’s then important to keep dead skin and oil from re-accumulating inside the pores. The best way to do this is to scrub and use a purifying mask on alternate days. Try L’OCCITANE Immortelle Brightening Instant Exfoliator which will keep your pores clear of debris.

Dull skin, and when I exfoliate to get rid of it, it dry out my face in winter and still looks dull!

Your skin may be dehydrated, which is a lack of water inside the skin cell. Because the issue is at the cellular level, exfoliating won’t address it. Try using L’OCCITANE’S Angelica Skin Care range which will rehydrate your skin leaving it fresh and glowing, flooding your cells with water and giving your complexion a truly radiant glow without feeling greasy, oily or sticky.

Large pores

Remember to use a toner after your cleanser. This will tighten the pores. Keep it in the fridge, the cooling effect also helps! Exfoliate and mask regularly.

Winter Skincare Tip 1: Shorten The Showers

by L'Occitane USA

Shorten The Showers

Long, steamy showers are very comforting in cold weather but they are also very dehydrating for the skin.

Hot water removes the skin's natural oils more quickly than warm or cold water. By removing too much of that natural protection, the skin becomes dry (flaky, itchy, uncomfortable...) and looses its moisture.

Take shorter showers or baths and use warm water instead of steamy hot.

L’OCCITANE Remains Committed to Japan

by L'Occitane USA

L’OCCITANE Remains Committed to Japan Through Reconstruction Projects

On March 11, 2011 at 2:46PM, an earthquake of magnitude 9 on the Richter scale devastated over 300 miles of the eastern coastline of Japan, leading to the disappearance of over 10,000 people. 150,000 people had to be evacuated and lodged in temporary shelters. First aid associations have gradually given way to reconstruction projects.

L’OCCITANE and Japan have a privileged relationship: since its arrival in 1998, the brand has awakened a veritable craze in the archipelago, where it now achieves 25% of its global sales. Over 700 employees work for L’OCCITANE en Provence - Japan. Following the disaster, and once first aid had been delivered by the Japanese Government and humanitarian associations, the employees of the subsidiary decided to meet the victims in the accommodation centers and comfort them by giving them more than 50,000 L’OCCITANE products.

At the same time, just after the disaster, L’OCCITANE engaged with local associations in order to select a reconstruction project in the north of the country. The community center of the city of Kamaishi, in the region of Iwaté, was largely destroyed. It was a gathering place for the inhabitants around cultural and sports events. L’OCCITANE has chosen to create a partnership with the KnK Association (Kokkyo naki Kodomotachi, ie. Children without Borders) to restore and re-equip the center. L’OCCITANE launched a fundraising campaign among its employees, shareholders and subsidiaries to fund reconstruction projects in Japan. 2.5 million dollars were collected from 12 different countries. One of projects supported will be the reopening of the Kamaishi center in April 2012.

International Women's Day Soap

by L'Occitane USA

History of the soap factory told by Maud Reboul, L'OCCITANE's Sustainable Ingredients Manager.

“We chose this soap’s factory two years ago. I go to Burkina Faso every 4 months to meet women and ensure shea butter quality and payments… I met this women, named Barkissa Bassia, in a very small shelter on the main road in Leo. She had one baby in her arms and one little girl hanging from her leg. She was very shy; she didn’t speak fluent French. She explained to me that she produces classic soaps to get additional income in order to help her family. Her husband left home and left her alone with children. She was resolute, determined to live better. We were impressed by her motivation.

Afterwards, she sent me a letter informing me that she has created a small soap factory called NUNUNA. We trained her and other women to produce traditional soaps enriched with shea butter. We sent materials from the L’OCCITANE factory in Manosque (tins, perfume, soap-making process…). In 2010, we gave her an order of 40,000 units – production of the 2011 Women’s Day soap. She hired 6 women to help her to produce. Each woman has bought a bicycle. They also get money to pay for their children’s school. At the moment [March 2011], Barkissa is in Manosque for one month, to be trained by our team in a more advanced soap-making process. Nununa’s factory has now received another order from us of 40,000 units for 2012. Barkissa is a wonder-woman! She told me that Women’s Day represents for her a moment of happiness and time-off. They dance all day long and wear a specific dress with a colorful fabric. LADIES first!”

Christina's Trip To Burkina Faso - Sixth Post

by L'Occitane USA

Our Director of Brand Communication, Christina Polychroni, is documenting her current trip to Burkina Faso. This is her final post from her visit to Burkina Faso.

Back in New York, back in yet another snow storm... But looking back to the four days we spent in Burkina Faso with a big smile ...because this trip was for me much more than just business and much more than just travel pleasure.

Starting generic and going more specific:

Generic facts: Look at the pictures of the trip and you will probably agree with me that we are or should be content with our lives. All the things we take for granted are not the standard nor the norm in other parts of the world, so let’s all smile and be thankful for what we have. Specific facts: Working for L’Occitane makes me feel proud and happy. Why? Simply because the ingredient that we all love so much in the company, the miraculous Shea Butter, comes straight from that small country in West Africa and it is created through the handmade efforts of 12,000 women – the same way as was done by their mothers, grandmothers, and so on... It is about paying homage to all these women and their powerful presence, and being able to honor their traditions by simply continuing our business - and thus being able to offer a better life, food, water, literacy, and assistance in their first entrepreneurial steps.

So for me, this trip was life-changing- an opportunity to appreciate what I have but also L’Occitane’s efforts to make a difference in people’s lives...in the land of honorable people...

Christina's Trip To Burkina Faso - Fifth Post

by L'Occitane USA

Our Director of Brand Communication, Christina Polychroni, is documenting her current trip to Burkina Faso. This is her fifth post.

3rd day in Burkina Faso, by now we are more accustomed to the climate and conditions and also in love with all small children on the streets …cannot wait to hug them and shake hands with them, something they really enjoy doing!

So off we go to a soap production center! More specifically, the center where we make very special soaps for L’Occitane, like the one that will be coming in 2 months (surprise surprise!) and will honor Women’s Day on March 8, 2011 - what better way to celebrate women’s power than a soap that has been created by such strong women...enjoy the pictures!

And then...a safari in Africa. The Nazinga Park is next, (http://www.parks.it/world/BF/gibier.nazinga/Epar.html) after 2 hours of driving from Leo.

Attempt to see wild animals at night on the 19th...no result, so we return to the camp for a short night’s sleep as we will try again next morning. (Here we are, April and I, on the back of the pick-up, showered in dust during the safari - but spirits high. We are confident we will see more animals)

Next morning comes quickly, and at 5:30am we are ready for the wild. Success!! We count monkeys, antelopes (and some animals that look like antelopes so we call them antelopes anyway) and around 12 elephants...among which one male elephant that does not like our staring at him so he starts moving towards us in a not so friendly way...

Christina's Trip To Burkina Faso - Fourth Post

by L'Occitane USA

Our Director of Brand Communication, Christina Polychroni, is documenting her current trip to Burkina Faso. This is her fourth post.

On our first full day in Burkina Faso, we also visited the village of Bozo, where we were very excited to see entrepreneurial efforts from local women, with the support of L’Occitane and the non-profit organization Entrepreneur Du Monde- helping women through microfinance programs that offer loans, savings management, and training , placing very poor families on the path to sustainable development. Here are some pics that show women that participate and also lots of smiling children, that always greeted us excited, especially when they would have the picture taken.

Also, with the help of the non-profit organization Aide et Action, L’Occitane has sponsored literacy centers , where women can learn to read and write- we visited a center in the village of Bourra...enjoy the picture of the women, with children sleeping tied on their back.

And pay attention to the little boy that is turning the wheel so that water continues to come out of the village water well!

More to come tomorrow!
