Oats - Avena sativa

  • Description
    • The oat plant (Poaceae family) is an annual grass with flowers and seeds in loose light panicles with drooping branches (unlike barley or wheat, which have compact ears).
  • Traditions
    • Breeders feed oats to rams. Taken internally, oats boost energy levels and calm the nerves. Used externally, they soothe irritated skin and dermatosis.
  • Properties
    • Since the early 20th century, oats have been used in beauty products for their soothing properties. Oat flour is obtained by grinding the seeds. Very rich in starch, it is applied to the skin as a softener. Oat milk is also used to nourish and hydrate dry and damaged skin.
