Botanist's Glossary

Mandarin Satsuma Tree - Citrus reticulata cv.

  • Description
    • The satsuma mandarin (Rutaceae family) is a Japanese variety and a particularly hardy version of the true mandarin. Its fruit is similar to the mandarin fruit, with a peel that remains green in places when the fruit is mature.
  • Traditions
    • This mandarin tree is widely cultivated in Japan, where its seedless fruits are much appreciated. It is also planted in gardens since it forms very attractive, somewhat pendulous bushes.
  • Properties
    • Satsuma mandarin extract has properties that inhibit the synthesis of melanin - the dark pigment responsible for marks on the skin. It is thus included in the composition of lightening products.
