Peppermint - Mentha piperita

  • Description
    • Peppermint (Lamiaceae family) is a hybrid of water mint and spearmint and has a strong, penetrating scent. It has a warm, aromatic taste that leaves behind a pleasant fresh sensation. There are varieties of peppermint that have very distinctive scents.
  • Traditions
    • Many types of peppermint are cultivated on a large scale. Menthol is extracted from peppermint and widely used in confectionery and by the soft drinks industry. The mint aroma also has many pharmaceutical applications. Peppermint essential oil is very strong and dangerous for young children. It should therefore be used with care.
  • Properties
    • The essential oil, obtained by steam distillation of the leaves, has toning and antiseptic properties. It purifies and gives a feeling of freshness.
