A Ride Through Land & Sea in Balagne

A region in Upper Corsica, Balagne is a pearl. Between its mountains, the intoxicating scent of the local scrubland and extraordinary beaches on the coast, it’s a little piece of Corsica to discover without delay!

Ah, Corsica! We all dream about it, especially during the winter months. This is precisely why you must act now if you hope to find yourself, after a few (long) weeks, on the waterfront, overlooking the bay of... Calvi! The pink city of Upper-Corsica is a marvel with its citadel and never-ending beaches: between refreshing walks through the city’s alleyways, a stop at the harbor, or lazing on the warm sand, it’s the essential stop in any discovery of Balagne. Further along the road leading to the resolutely Corsican town of L’Ile Rousse, some small secrets are hidden: the village of Lumio, one of the most popular in the region with its majestic views over the bay of Calvi and the famous L’Ile Rousse, but also Algojala beach, the surfers hangout, or Corbara which will introduce you to the mountains of Corsica and their local artisans. Balagne is the scent of the maquis, the local scrubland, and the Immortelle flowers, which dot the landscape with their bright yellow color. Further down the road is the L’Ile Rousse, which is worth a stop on market days when its old covered market overflows with Corsican specialties, or for a lively game of “boules” under the plane trees on the large square. Further on, the Cap Corse peninsula will summon you, but that’s another story...
