Christian Lacroix’s Tribute to the Arlesienne, A Fubiz Recommendation

At the Chapelle de la Charité, Christian Lacroix presents his vision of and admiration for the Arles woman. His exhibition on Arlesian beauty particularly moved L’Occitane and its founder Olivier Baussan, who sponsors this tribute.

Born in Arles, the great couturier Christian Lacroix wanted to share the traditions of the city where he spent his childhood with the public. He became interested in the character and the traditional dress of the “Arlesienne,” or local woman, by brilliantly reinventing traditional costumes from private family archives dating from the early twentieth century.

Beyond simply a style of dress, the meaning of the word has evolved, and an "Arlesienne" is also someone we wait for but who never comes, an illusory and volatile being that can never be possessed. The challenge of Lacroix’s project is found in this split, how to express both a body and an emotion? How to give soul to a costume? It is here that famous fashion photographer Katerina Jebb stepped in. She seems to be the only one who could add this elusive impression, this ghostly aspect, of shade and lines to the Arlesienne costumes, thanks to her scanner technique that transforms a being of flesh and blood into an absent and evanescent entity.

For Lacroix, the myth of the Arlesienne continues to be written on the faces of women of all backgrounds and origins; birthplaces of beauty, heritage and modernity.
