Perfumes & Aromas of Christmas, Karine Dubreuil’s Memories from Grasse

Karine Dubreuil is L’Occitane en Provence’s perfumer. As Christmas approaches, this perfume creator has developed two very personal scents, olfactory evocations of her childhood Christmases spent in Grasse.
By Angélique Jurquet

For Karine Dubreuil, her first memory of Christmas in Grasse is visual : nature takes a back seat, while the sun turns a richer gold. It’s all time that the Golden Mimosa, Provence’s veritable ‘winter sun,’ blooms. The perfumer remembers the bouquets that she made bit by bit from this flower composed of yellow balls and which filled her grandmother’s house with fragrance. Karine Dubreuil has decided to recreate this combination of odors and light for l’Occitane by creating “Fleur d’Or & Acacia,” a floral, musky and luminous scent, that combines all the delicacy of the Mimosa of Grasse, with lighter and subtly honeyish Acacia notes.

For men, Karine Dubreuil has created “Cèdre & Oranger” a woody, citrusy scent that opens with a note of orange, a winter fruit par excellence. Next comes the second note, the rawer and woodier one of cedar, a tree with silver reflections, that recalls the snow a little. The perfume also possesses a touch of spice, a mix of cardamom and red berries, that plunges us directly into a Christmas atmosphere.

This Christmas extravaganza reminds Karine Dubreuil of other perfumed memories: that of a Christmas tree, so prettily decorated by her mother, or the more gourmet ones, with candied chestnuts and clementines served at the end of a meal, by a roaring open fire. You can almost imagine yourself there.
