The Sainte-Baume Forest : a Mystical & Shady Corner of Provence

Not far from the sea, and halfway between the two regions the Bouches-du-Rhône and the Var, the Sainte-Baume forest is one of the most popular shady spots in Provence, but also one of its most mystical, according to certain legends…

Located about 20 kilometers from the coast, not far from Marseille, the Sainte-Baume forest combines both green and mountain landscapes, to the delight of hikers who venture there. This vast shady corner of Provence, between the Bouches-du-Rhône and Var regions, is particularly popular in summer, when the heat forces you to look for a little coolness.

These ‘lungs’ of Provence, which stretch over 140 hectares and peak at 750 meters of altitude, possess remarkable flora and fauna. Linden trees, pines, cedars and oaks shelter bluebells, primroses, violets, broom, and even some wild roses. Nature in its pristine state, that appeals to birds, abundant in the Sainte-Baume forest, but also to wild boars, rabbits, hares, foxes or badgers, that you may well cross paths with during your promenades.

This forest is at the heart of many legends, which lends it a slightly mystical air. Revered since the earliest Antiquity, Sainte-Baume appears in numerous tales and notably in that of the Roman poet Lucain who writes in the first century AD, “there was a sacred wood… a sanctuary of the gods from the barbarian beliefs.” Over a thousand years later, Pope Boniface VII forbid touching the trees of Sainte-Baume, which today are protected by the National Forest Service.
