“Women of Provence & the Mediterranean”: An Exhibition at the Regards de Provence Museum

Until May 4, 2014, the Regards de Provence Museum in Marseille celebrates women in their everyday life. For the duration of the exhibition, "Women of Provence & the Mediterranean” offers a two-pronged journey, highlighting both visual arts and writing.
By Justine Fiordelli

Paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs... The first part of the exhibition “Women in Provence and the Mediterranean” presents nearly 70 works devoted to the distinctive daily life of women from Provence, from the nineteenth century to the present day. By turns shepherd, washerwoman (Mayan), drawer of water (Monticelli), grape picker (Montenard) or fishmonger (Verdilhan), women are represented with precision and in all of their forms.

In addition to these works are nudes painted by great artists including Delacroix, Dali, Monticelli, Gable, Marchand, Cousturier or Leydet. But the program does not stop there! If visual arts compose the major part of the exhibition, another approach based around words is also presented.

You will discover extracts from novels, essays and poems, but also personal stories about women. All this in a “bonus” section to be enjoyed independently from the rest of the works and which offers an extra dimension – much more extensive and in-depth – to the exhibition. In short, it’s a rich and exciting program!
